Agile software methodologies can be applied to the publishing industry. We should work on that together.
I heard an interesting talk by Michael Covington last night on the idea of applying agile software methodologies to publishing. Yes! We would benefit from adopting some of these ideas in publishingâboth in how we develop individual projects, and in how we develop our organizations, and all along the spectrum. This is an invitation, a call for participation and dialogue.
I am no expert in agile, but I have been learning about it in the context of software development, and also thinking about it and trying to apply it to publishing (mostly in the areas of editing and project development), for about 10 years. It was encouraging to have Michael talking about it, but it made me think we in publishing would benefit from a community-based effort to explore this topic.
I am inviting all, especially those involved in publishing and interested in thinking about this topic together, to contribute to this site and this project. If you’re interested in improving the way we go about publishing projects and running our publishing business, you are welcome.
The best way to get started right now is to fork the github repository for this site, write some posts or pages, and submit pull requests. (If you don’t know how to do this, it’s not that hard to learn â go to paraphraster and click “Read the Guide”. We plan to have other ways to contribute in the future.)
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
